This Maserati Mistral 4.0 Spyder

Between 1963 and 1970, Maserati built the Tipo AM109, better known as the Mistral, which was available as either a coupe, of which 828 examples were built, or a Spyder, of which a mere 125 were built.

Now that you had chosen your specification of body, you faced your next decision, which size engine? The Mistral was available with a 3,500 cc, 3,700 cc and finally a 4,014 cc inline six-cylinder Maserati race-derived, Tipo 109 engine, with the ultimate specification being a 4.0-litre Spyder, just as the car offered here.

Of the 125 Spyders built, only 37 examples were fitted with the 4.0-litre, fuel-injected, engine from new. This car is documented with copies of its original 1966 Maserati Avviso Spedizione (shipping notice) confirming it to have originally been finished in Argento Auteuil (silver) with a Pelle Nera (black) interior. This document also confirms the car to have been built with a 4.0-litre engine, and delivered new to Maserati dealer, Sport Auto in Rome, where it was first registered.

Interestingly, this car is also fitted with the incredibly rare, optional hardtop. Having spent some time in Austria, this Mistral Spyder returned to Italy. This car was later fully restored by Bacchelli & Villa, finished in the elegant green and beige combination we see today, before being bought by an important Milanese collector in 2012. Once again registered in Italy, this Spyder passed to the current owner in 2016. During this ownership, the car resided in a sizeable collection, sharing garage space with a Ferrari 275 GTB 6C, Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Super Sport Villa d’Este Coupe by Touring, Alfa Romeo 1900 C Super Sprint Cabriolet by Touring, Porsche 356 and BMW 327/328 Cabriolet.

In January 2018, the current owner contacted the Maserati Classiche Department in Modena, who confirmed that this car, chassis AM109/S1 633, was delivered new as a 4.0-litre Mistral Spyder. Today, this Maserati is presented in exceptional condition, complete with the exceedingly rare optional hardtop.

This Maserati — the most desirable Mistral in its 4.0-litre Spyder specification — offers a true connoisseur a very rare opportunity to acquire one of the truly great 1960s Maseratis.
