This Volkswagen Type 2 T1 Samba ’21-Window’:

The Volkswagen Type 2, following on from the Type 1, or Beetle as we know it, started production in 1950 and continues to be manufactured today. The Type 2 was available as a panel van, high-roof van, flat-bed pickup truck, camping van, kombi, but perhaps most famously the Microbus, as we see here.

Affectionately unofficially known as the ‘splitty’ or ‘split-window’ thanks to its definitive split windscreen, the Microbus started production in Wolfsburg before moving to Volkswagen’s new Transporter factory from 1956 in Hanover.

The beautiful Volkswagen seen here was delivered new to the American market in 1963, having left the German factory on the 21st October, and delivered to the first owner in Chicago, Illinois. For the American market, VW renamed the Microbus, calling it the Samba, with these vehicles being the most desirable in today’s market. The Samba has two pivot doors, a fabric sunroof and eight panoramic windows in the roof.

As confirmed by the Volkswagen Certificate, this Samba was powered by an air-cooled, 1,483 cc, four-cylinder boxer engine mounted in the rear. This certificate also confirms the optional extras, including the six pop-out side windows and North American Export Package, which included twin reversing lights, MPH speedometer, sealed beam headlights, hazard warning lights, mounting for safety belts, laminated windscreens, bumper over riders and dual-circuit brake system.

This Samba was also originally finished in Green Turquoise, as it is presented today. Having been delivered new to the USA, this Samba then travelled to Japan before being returned to its country of birth, Germany. in 2012. Once back in Germany, this 21-window Samba was treated to a complete restoration, documented with over 1000 photographs from before, during and after the works.

Since entering our ownership, this Samba bus has journeyed from our Italian showroom to the local trattoria in Bergamo, having carefully transported and won over every member of the Girardo & Co. team with its charm and charisma.

Now registered in Italy, with European taxes paid, this beautifully restored Samba is only waiting for you to take to the wheel for one of the most enjoyable driving experiences of your life. Your next decision will be who to invite with you, after all, you can take eight of your favourite friends … or colleagues!
